WE LOVED THIS BOOK . . . 5 Gold Stars
I bought this for my twin 7 year olds after they saw an ad in National Wildlife Magazine. They’re good readers but they had some trouble reading Pengey’s adventures. After a few, “Dad . . ? what’s this word?” I thought I’d see what it was all about.
I thought this book started off a little slow and that it was mimicking March of the Penguins. Then I read the copyright date, 2005, the same year the film was in theaters.
As I read on with my kids I began to see where the author was going. He developed a story with refreshingly new characters, the star being Pengey Penguin.
Some of his phrasing is old fashioned, some of the words a little sophisticated for kids, but in all cases those old fashioned phrases and words went to tell a more exciting, captivating story. The challenges were worth the effort, which was made easy by the authors distinctive story telling style. The voice’s of the characters are unique and my kids wanted to act them out. I won’t go into detail because I don’t want to spoil the surprises.
The author also wove real life science into the story and that gave us a chance to talk about those facts--each one of those became a life lesson. A painless way to learn about nature - - nice touch, I thought.
All of a sudden I was on a magical journey with the greatest little guy I’ve met in a long time. He just happens to be a penguin named Pengey. We Loved this book. Ed, Betty and the Girls - NY - August 2007
